Majolica in the Media: Antiques Roadshow BBC, Glasgow, Scotland

Antiques Roadshow UK continues to be a wonderful resource for seeing majolica online. This season 38, episode 22 from April 2016, is set in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. The subject is a majolica vase the owner’s family called “The Ugly Pot.”

Appraiser Wayne Colquhoun gave the owner the background on the piece. He said it had been produced by the Ault Pottery for designer Christopher Dresser around 1880.

The piece bore the impressed Dresser mark on the base as well as the Ault catalog number. It also showed some specific damage.

The man’s grandfather had drilled the vase to convert it to a lamp so the appraisal value dropped from £2000 to £1000. Still, that’s not bad for an “ugly pot”
